BETWEEN THE LINES

When we created the Auren branding, we thought a lot about our DNA. We wanted to pay homage to the natural materials we use. Our gemstones share an algorithm with the earth and the contoured patterns in eroded rock formations, shorelines and mountain ranges. So we created an illustration based on this idea, referencing gemstone formation over thousands of years and the earth from which they are mined. We even created some extra facets on the edges of the lettering in our brand logo. Subtle and hardly noticeable, they reference our gemstone cutting process.  It’s all in the details!

BLACK AND WHITE

I love black and white photography for its timelessness. Creatively, with colour stripped away and  with the power of light and contrast, it is the medium that makes Icons of its subjects.

Here are some of my works from my earlier days, some of which were shot on film with my trusted Mamiya RZ67. I still love the sound of winding along the film and the heavy clunk of its shutter.

ROSE CUT SAPPHIRES

Rose-cut Sapphires were chosen as the centrepiece for this bespoke gemstone collar we made exclusively for the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The sapphire slices are one of a kind, bezel set and linked with a watercolour array of gemstones including blue topaz, crystal, chalcedony, moonstone and green amethyst. The colours echo shorelines and we think despite its exaggerated proportions this flowing collar has an easy chic appeal. If only we had kept one for ourselves!

MY HERO

When the Georgia O’Keefe exhibition opened at the Tate Modern in 2016 we were straight there.  Not only is her work some of the most iconic and recognisable of the 20th Century, she was a pioneer, an adventurer and a provocateur, revered for posing in candid and sometimes nude photographs taken by her lover Alfred Stieglitz,   which caused enormous controversy back in the 1920’s. A true icon and a trailblazer for women everywhere.

THE LIGHT FANTASTIC

Willy Vanderperre has a solo exhibition at London’s Store X which opened back in February. The beauty and emotion in his mages is powerful especially when seeing it in an exhibition space opposed to the confines of fashion magazines.

There is an intimacy and a sense of poetry in his work, as well as a visceral connection with youth culture. His inimitable style echoes through the crafted use of light and the figurative compositions.

COWBOY KATE

& Other Stories, published in 1968 by photographer Sam Haskins, is one of the most influential fashion photography books to this day. His work visibly influenced a crop of 1960’s fashion photographers, and the evocative, enigmatic photographs have a style and ease that lets you feel  you are almost in the moment.

A chance meeting at Tate Britain one rainy afternoon with Sam’s son, Ludwig Haskins lead me to discover Sam’s work, and even begin to collect it. He was a true master of his art and a pioneer of a new fashion storytelling format.

LINES AND CONTOURS

The gemstones we use in our jewellery are a constant reminder of both the natural beauty and constant evolution of the natural world around us. At Auren we base our design process around cutting the stones to reveal their beauty, from the light reflecting transparent gems to textured Labradorite and Moonstone, who’s contours and inconstant texture create iridescent highlights when cut and polished, we are fascinated by their evocative beauty and reminded of the awesome planet around us.

Preserving our habitat is one of the most poignant issues that we now face together. For all of us who are humbled by the power and beauty of the world we live in, it is our collective responsibility to take care of it.

WAY BACK WHEN...

I worked as a photographer, i spent countless hours backstage observing the frantic flurry of activity and effervescence that happened before fashion shows. I loved the feeling of celebration and relief that filled the air as soon as it was over, a split second of euphoria before people all of a sudden rushed off to the next event or threw themselves into breakdown.

Here are some of my snaps backstage at Vivienne Westwood from the past 10 years, full of famous faces from rock n roll legends to Hollywood royalty, there was always an eclectic crowd having lots and lots of fun amidst the brilliantly staged catwalk shows.

Enjoy!

KALEIDOSCOPIC INSPIRATION

Dreamlike rainbow colour and mesmerising geometric pattern ignited by light refraction: here are some of the moodboard images we gathered when dreaming up designs for our Kaleidoscope collection.

Each of our gemstones is hand cut with a classical technique called Rose Cut. We applied rose cutting to jewel tone gemstones, which refract the light with the same hypnotic effect as looking into a kaleidoscope. We love that this dancing light effect also captures the feeling of the gemstones found in their natural geode crystals. Sometimes nature really is stranger and more beautiful than fiction.
